At the end of each year we see lots of people sharing summaries of their music habits for the past 12 months.

This is always fun, often suprising, and usually involves elaborate stories about why that techno version of "wheels on the bus" is in your top 3 because actually your kid wanted to listen to it in the bathroom and left it on repeat for 6 hours.

But what those shared summaries don't include is music that people have actually bought. They are derived from a number of "plays" or "streams" rather than any music actually purchased.

In the UK, over half of musicians (53%) need to rely on additional jobs or alternative income sources outside the music industry to sustain themselves, and nearly half (44%) cite a lack of sustainable income as a major barrier to continuing their careers in music.

Globally, in 2023 around 45.6 million tracks on streaming platforms generated zero plays

bc wrapped lets you share your 2024 music habits, based on artists you have directly supported via purchases through Bandcamp

How Does Ranking Work?

There is no 'official' way to rank the popularity of artists in your collection, so the algorithm is experimental and largely based on testing with my own results.

  • Number of purchases for each artist in 2024 are added up
  • Releases that came via a subscription are not counted for rankings (but are displayed)
  • Subscribing to an artist in 2024 counts as 2 releases
  • Previous purchases of the same artist in previous years are counted
  • Time difference between when something was released and when you purchased it is counted
  • New Artists are derived from purchases you have made in 2024 for artists that don't previously appear in your collection
  • Releases with a 'non-standard' purchase code are not counted

The main goal was to try and heavily skew towards choices you made in 2024, while also trying to ensure artists were not at the top of their own list (hence the last point above).

This is not perfect and for some people (especially artists who receive releases via labels), it might result in fewer or less accurate results.
